The unique attractiveness of Riebeek-Kasteel

Riebeek-Kasteel is one of the oldest towns in South Africa, situated at 80 km north-east of Cape Town in The Riebeek Valley together with its sister town Riebeek West. I had no cooking clue that this magnificent town existed and when I heard about it’s charm and splendor, I knew I had to visit it. Surprisingly enough it was only 45 min away from my home in Durbanville, so it was a quick but extremely beautiful drive. After wandering through the town and poking our noses into all the little nooks and crannies, we discovered a few gems:

Mama Cucina

We had lunch at Mama Cucina, an authentic Italian restaurant nestled in the middle of the town. Their food is always fresh, innovative and firmly grounded in the Italian Mediterranean tradition! Both Jacques and I tried their pasta and needles to say, it was gustoso.

Crystal and Twine

I am the biggest fan of home decor and can get sucked in for hours just browsing through antique and vintage shops. When I walked into the Crystal and Twine shop, my mouth dropped to floor and I stood there a little speechless. It had everything I had ever added to my “mental must buy list” – I probably walked around for hours just choosing things I could not live without (much to my husbands dismay). The Crystal and Twine shop offers quality, affordable French inspired décor, gifts, kitchenware, small furniture pieces and all things beautiful for your home.

Still Pure

You cannot walk past Still Pure and not get pulled in by their magical smells of oils and bath products. It’s a heavenly feeling to say the least. All their products are naturally hand made and ranges from bath salts to healing balms and soaps. I purchased some of the rose geranium bath salts and it turned my bath into a tub of magic!

Aitsa

Aista was started by two friends in 2005 with the aim of providing a wide variety of locally-sourced goods and services under one roof. Focusing on the concept Local is Lekker, Aitsa brings you a variety of home-baked cakes, pies, fresh farm bread, rusks, brownies, fudge and milktarts.  Here we bought some home made fudge and bread, it didn’t even last past the exit of the town before we scuffed it down.

It is not difficult at all to fall in love with this alluring little country town. It has so much to offer and is totally worth a visit. If you’re into olives then make sure you save the date for their annual olive festival which usually occurs in May.

Have you been to Riebeek-Kasteel and think we missed out on something? Let me know before my next visit.

Weekend away at 3Flavours Guest House in Pringle Bay

We recently spent the weekend at 3Flavours Guest House in Pringle Bay. This 4 star guest house is perfectly situated to serve as a safe heaven from which you can explore the Overberg and surrounding countryside.

Upon arrival we were welcomed by Sarita who was the manager on call. She told us about the best places to grab dinner and also offered to book us a table. In our rooms, a fresh glass of juice and a bunch of fynbos awaited us. Most places offer welcome drinks and cold towels but never did I experience fynbos before. I think it’s such a beautiful touch and perfectly suited for the Western Cape.

This is truly the perfect place for someone looking to escape. The room has no TV which could be great or sad depending how you look at it. We were booked into the honeymoon suite so the view was absolutely to die for and we definitely did not need a TV, in fact it was so gorgeous that it didn’t even bother me that my phone was dead. Later that evening, Sarita organized in-room massages for both Jacques and I, which definitely kept us entertained.

Breakfast the next morning was perfect as we are not big eaters. It was light but perfect for us. 3Flavours is definitely a great place for couples looking for a break. If you have little kids I would be a little hesitant unless you have something to keep them entertained, although the pool in Summer time could provide ample entertainment.

Franschhoek Country House and Villas

This is not your usual establishment review, it may be all about my proposal, but the venue was perfect and I had to brag a little about Franschhoek Country House and Villas…or maybe a lot.

When a couple announces their engagement, only two things concerns their friends and family the most; the proposal and the ring. After watching countless YouTube videos on Flash Mob proposals, I was convinced that that was the ultimate perfect proposal. Jacques is a rather private person, so a Flash Mob was definitely out of the question. But little did I know that he would surprise me with my perfect proposal in one of the most romantic ways possible.

Jacques took me to the Franschhoek Country House and Villas, an amazing 5 star establishment that will leave you breathless.

He spoilt me with a Luxury Villa Suite which overlooked the vineyards and mountains. Our Villa was decorated in classic french decor and oozed elegance and class. The pictures speak for themselves, however something worth mentioning is that:

  1. There were built in surround sound speakers in the bathroom allowing you to listen to music from the TV.
  2. The staff turn down your beds for you at night, place your slippers and robes on the beds and have water and chocolates kept at your bedside.
  3. Underfloor heating throughout the Villa!

We had dinner at the Monneaux Restaurant. We had a 3 course fine dining meal and were treated with such grace by the staff and chef who accommodated all our dietary requirements so graciously. After dinner as we began walking back to Villa, Jacques insisted we sit down for a while on a pretty bench in the middle of the garden. That’s when he got down on one knee and asked me if I would marry him, to which I replied (after shedding tears for a few minutes)…yes!

The next day we had breakfast, enjoyed a full body couples massage at the spa and spent the rest of the afternoon in Franschhoek. After months of thinking a huge and flashy proposal was exactly what I needed, Jacques surprised me with the most romantic and intimate proposal and I could not have been more happier. It was extremely perfect, a moment I will remember forever.
